Introduction

It is a shrine built to pay tribute to Bak Je-sang, a loyal vassal of Silla, and his wife. Bak Je-sang is a descendant of Bak Hyeokgeose, the founder of Silla, and was born in Chunghyo-dong, Yangju in the 8th year of King Naemul’s reign (363). After the enthronement of King Nulji, Bak Je-sang was asked to rescue two of the king’s younger brothers who had been taken as hostages in Goguryeo and Japan. He successfully rescued Bokho from Goguryeo first before going over to Japan to rescue Misaheun as well.

However, he was captured and, after being severely tortured, he eventually suffered a burning decapitation. Bak’s wife took her two daughters, climbed up Chisullyeong Peak and waited and waited for her husband to return from Japan. Her body eventually turned into rocks, Mangbuseok Rock, and her soul became a bird and flew away to hide in Euneulam. To pay tribute to Bak Je-sang, the king bestowed upon him and his wife, Mrs. Kim, posthumous honors of Daeachan and Gukdaebuin, respectively while welcoming one of Bak’s daughters as the wife of his second son. A shrine was built here to host rituals for Bak Je-sang and it is called Chisanseowon Confucian Academy.
